Tennis

Yesterday I received a phone call from my neighbor down the road asking if I had heard about the free tennis lessons in town. I had not, so she told me about them. Her 8-year-old Jenna was going to take the lessons and wanted to know if the girls could too. I signed them up right away. They will last for 6 weeks. We've wanted to do something for the girls...get them involved, but since finances are really tight, (and I hate to give up my Saturday morning sleep) we had not signed them up for anything (swimming was a thought, but meets Saturday mornings and I knew we would miss a few of them.) This seems to be the perfect opportunity. I know my Grandpa (and Grandma) Sorrentino would be so proud! Grandpa still plays tennis several times a week (I think he has more energy then me!). I used to play some with my Grandma when I was younger, but I really wasn't very good. I took a tennis class with my brother in our first life in Big Flats, and then took tennis as a PE elective in College. That's about the extent of my "career".

The tennis lessons are given by the tennis coach from Marion High School. His name is Doug Porter. He is also an IWU grad. (although I believe he graduated a few years before me) His dad is the head tennis coach at IWU too. His sister Deb (now Wuertley - whose husband owns the real estate company our realtor here works for) taught the class tonight (with the help of some of the high school tennis players) because her brother had a meet. She, if I recall, was a fantastic tennis player too. Both of these coaches attend College Church with us.

The girls did great! Katy hit almost every ball that came at her back over the net, and Lilly did really well too. I didn't get to watch Lilly as much because she was further down the tennis courts and there were people blocking my view of her at times.
I was really proud of both of them. They had fun too.

It was a bit chilly with the wind when we left home, so I bundled them in layers (much to their disgust) and we headed off to the park. The sun came out while we were there, so they didn't need as many layers, and the sun reddened our cheeks a bit.

While I was at the park, I stood talking with my neighbor friend, than a mom from MOPS came up to me and chatted for a few minutes. There was another mom there who I wanted to introduce myself too, but didn't get a chance. Her daughter Heidi is in Katy's Sunday School Class (Katy talks of Heidi). On the way home, I found out that her other daughter Elizabeth is in Lilly's Sunday School Class, so I'll have to meet them on Sunday.

I would guess there were 50 or so kids there all together. The kids ranged from age 5 up through 5th or 6th grade. They split them up and were very good with them. I really enjoyed watching Deb with the group Katy was in. She was good.

Who knows...maybe one of my kids will end up really enjoying tennis. It's a good sport.

Sounds like fun for the girls. I too took tennis as a PE elective in college... but it was not my thing. I thought I did ok, but for some reason the teacher didn't think so. It was a very short lived career!
