Back in the blog world

I decided after much guilt tripping (mainly of myself) that I better get back to my blog.

Today is a beautiful day. My weather widget says that it is 33 degrees out here, but I don't believe it. Katy and I are sitting on our back patio (that we didn't have this time last year!) doing school. It is so nice out here. The only one that is not happy is Smokey (our cat) because she is stuck in her room. While we were sitting here, she somehow pushed the screen door open enough to stick her paw out and almost got her head out before I caught it. (She's not an outside cat) Then, she found a hole in the screen and started pushing on that. Now, she's in her room pounding on the door and howling that she can't be out here with us.

Katy's doing great with her school work. We've finished her Social Studies book, several of her small reading books, and just finished her math today. (I have another math book we'll be working in, but she doesn't know it yet.) She is almost finished with her science book. It amazes me how fast she goes thru her books when it is just her working and not a class full of kids. I have a feeling we won't last until Lilly is done with school on May 30. That may cause some issues. I guess there isn't much I can do.

Finding friends

I've had fun the past 24 hours. I located several friends from my Jr. High days at Bethesda Christian School in Brownsburg, Indiana. It started about a week ago when my friend Joanna found me thru facebook. Then, Jeff found me. Since then, I found Ben's wife, and just found his sister!! Rachel and I spent a LOT of time together. In fact, I think it was Rachel that taught me to french braid on her barbie head. Funny thing is, I can't seem to french braid my girls' hair because I got so used to braiding my own hair that I can't seem to transfer back to doing it on the girls!

I also found another friend...my best friend thru 7th and 8th grade...Abigail. We'd lost track of each other, but I'm SOOO excited that we have connected. She lives in OH somewhere. I'm looking forward to connecting more. I saw on her facebook profile picture that she has 3 kids...boys, I think. It's amazing where we can go via the internet.

Company's coming

We are looking forward to company from home this weekend. IWU's High School weekend is this weekend (which means Phil is essentially not living at home due to duties at work), and we have a group coming from NY. Cliff and Darlene will be staying with us on Friday night. Although I really wish my parents were coming (it's been WAY to long since our Christmas visit even though I saw them at the end of January, it doesn't seem like it.) Anyway, it will be fun having company from home. We don't get overnight guests very often. The girls are "fighting" about whose room they'll be staying in. Phil said that he would determine that Friday morning before Lilly left for school. She has to get her room clean today and keep it clean in order for him to decide they can stay in her room (this is not an easy job...it is looking better than a few weeks ago, but she doesn't have the knack for organization that my friends Ronda and Jaena have. I wish I had their knack!). We shall see.

Time to make lunch

It is now almost 1. Katy is supposed to be down for quiet time at 1. I just realized I am supposed to have a phone training at 1:30. I guess I better hurry. I have to do the school run every afternoon now. Our carpool changed since the other mom got a different job. She drives mornings, I drive afternoon. It works, just wont' be getting a nap as often as I might desire.

Guess this will have to be your update for now.

How is it working with one in school and one homeschooling? Are the girls okay with that? I've heard Dobson say that you have to choose the schooling option that best matches the needs of each child, but I've never known anyone who chose different options for their kids. I'm just curious as to how it works out for you(no judgement intended as I'm guessing like most homeschoolers you get that from time to time). Also...I don't know what curriculum you're using, so your situation may be completely different from ours. I just wanted to mention this. I chose not to go on to the first grade math book with Lukas when he finished the kindergarten math program we were using last year (Singapore). However, we are now behind in his first grade program for math because we needed to take our time with a couple of things. Now we're flying through it with ease, but I doubt we'll finish when I hoped to and may need to continue for 2-3 weeks after we're done with other subjects(which means after all his cousins are out of school, he'll still be doing math). Looking back, I should have just started the first grade program early. Just something to think about! Lukas loves that he is so far advanced in reading and language arts, and I'm guessing that most kids would love to know they are working through the next year's book as well!
