I've been feeling really miserable with a sinus head cold, so I've done a lot of sleeping today. I called my husband and asked if he could be home by the time Lilly got home (we carpool and today was thankfully not my day). He said ok, so I headed for bed and didn't think anything more of it. After awhile, I heard some noises and knew they weren't coming from sleeping Katy's room. I listened, then rolled over and smiled, knowing Phil must be home. It felt good to stay in bed and not worry about things.
I kept hearing the noises, and then heard the door slam into the garage. I assumed it was Phil going out to meet Lilly so she wouldn't come to the door. I rolled over and looked at the clock. "Oh my goodness. It's 3:20!" I decided I'd get out of bed to meet her too. I went to the back/garage door and turned on the light. Then, she came in.
I asked her, "Did Daddy let you in?"
"No."
"Where's Daddy?"
"I don't know."
"Didn't he let you in?"
"No, Mommy."
"Well, how did you get in?"
"Well, I knocked quietly on the front door, but you didn't answer. I thought you might be sleeping, so I walked around the house to check to see if your blinds were closed. They were. So, I walked around to the garage and saw that 1 of the 2 locks were open, so I got the hide-a-key and let myself in."
"Wow. Thanks for being so quiet and considerate so mommy could sleep." "What did you do with the key?"
"I put it back."
So, my afternoon burglar turned out to be a very cute, smart, and considerate burglar...a 7 year old girl!
I sure am glad she knew where the hide-a-key was! I knew there was a reason I drill her on that when I leave her with a babysitter! I always want to make sure she knows how to get into the house. (Unlike her mommy on that cold November day! See the post in November to read more about that frightful day!)
Oh how quickly our children grow up.
