Several weeks ago, we learned that the property we are in the process (ok, extended process) of purchasing was lakefront property. It happened through the night on a Thursday night, I think. It rained throughout the day, and through the night. I knew it had rained a lot, so as we were RUNNING through the house to get Lilly to school (before the final bell rang), Lilly said, “Mommy, there’s a lot of water out there in the street.” I thought she just meant that the ditches were full, so I said, “Yep” and moved on with my rushing. The van was in the garage, so I didn’t think anything more of it until I pulled out and sat in the driveway in shock. The entire cul-de-sac was flooded up to our driveway. The water was overflowing the field and the ditches. I couldn’t believe it. I turned off the van, ran inside to tell Phil, and wondered what on earth to do. He came out quite surprised, and said I should just drive through it and get to school. So, I did and hoped that it wouldn’t rain more or it would cover our driveway. It did eventually “grow” to almost cover our driveway, but we were still able to get in and out. I was glad I had a van so I could get through without any problem.
Lilly was in tears of concern over the fact that our neighbors wouldn’t be able to go anywhere with the road flooded.
After awhile, the rain turned to sleet and the temperature dropped. When we woke up the next morning, Lilly said, “Mommy, the water is all gone!” When I looked out, I realized that it had become one very large ice-skating rink! It did eventually recede, and we can now see the road.
We have since found out this is something that happens anytime there is a lot of rain. The city has tried to fix the problem, but apparently hasn’t gotten too far. Who knows, maybe we’ll get to go skating for free this winter!
