Today as I was looking through pictures from our trip to Chicago, it really hit me what the look was on Lilly's face when she got Joy, her Bitty Baby. It was the same look I had when I saw Lilly for the first time. As I look at the picture, I can feel all those feelings all over again. It boggles my mind. How can a young child feel those same feelings (ok, so not the exact ones because she didn't give birth after 10 days of labor (2 being VERY intense) or face a c-section, or....), but still. The look is so close to what I know I felt, it's scary!
I have to admit she is a wonderful mommy. She would take Joy with her everywhere she goes if I let her. I just don't think it is appropriate for Joy to go to school for something to happen to her. So, Lilly talks with the resident "baby sitter" Katy and asks her to take care of her kids while she is at school (she has an entire family! There's Erica and Emily, then the baby that she "acquired" from her sister named Anna (her best friend's name) and now since we seem to have named all Anna's family, we added the name of her new baby sister - Joy! Thanks for the inspiration, Michelle!) You just have to know... I explained to Lilly that she couldn't abuse her sister's willingness to babysit. She had to pay "daycare". So she told me she would pay her 25 cents a day. I laughed. I said,"No, Lilly, it's a lot more expensive then that." Then she suggested a dollar a day. That still wouldn't cut it in the real world. I told her that it wasn't uncommon in our former town to pay at least $25/day. That is usually for only 1 child, and she had 3 at that point. She still hasn't "paid up" with her sister.
Lilly almost always has Joy with her and her sister loves to "care" for her too. Ella, Katy's bear, loves Joy too. It is pretty cute to watch.
As I end this post, take a look at the picture and see if you can see what I mean. My little girl's mommy heart...
