My parents were here with us until Monday night. They were a tremendous help. Dad put Phil’s new grill together on Monday, and we got quite a bit done around the house.
Phil started work on Monday. He likes the job. He was given a “pent house” office. His office is upstairs in the Performing Arts Center and when you step outside it, overlooks the lobby. His office is away from much of the action, and is even equipped with a mop sink (called something else by one of his students!). You may have guessed it, he is using a maintenance closet. Currently, he has a temporary desk and chair, but that is it. He has no computer, no phone, and nothing else in there yet. His boss has been gone to a lighting conference in Las Vegas since Wednesday, so he was able to hang out in his office the last half of the week.
We visited Lilly’s school on Tuesday. My first impression had not been a highly positive one. I had a lot of “hang-ups” about the school, one being the appearance. We asked a lot of questions and were told we received the award for asking the MOST questions before and after enrolling our child! (I give all the credit for that to Laura Riz! It’s her fault for making me realize there was a lot to be considered when putting a child in school!) Lilly started school on Wednesday and is doing well. Indiana starts school earlier then NY, so we are having some catch up time, but she did great on both her spelling and math tests on Friday. She also received a “Star Award” in chapel on Friday. I don’t totally understand, but I think it was for coming to school (even though she was scared), and putting her heart into it. I thought that was pretty neat.
Katy is doing well. She’s enjoying just hanging out with mommy (and an occasional visit to daddy’s work!). On Wednesday, my cousin (who lives about 30 minutes away) asked if she could keep Katy for the school day so I could get some work done. That turned out great. Katy had met a couple of her girls on Sunday when my aunt came over bringing 2 of Kara’s daughters with her. I was able to get quite a bit done, including setting up bank accounts without kids! That almost seemed weird. Then, when I went to pick Katy up, Kara sent home supper! That was a real treat.
We’ve been enjoying having Phil home for lunch each day – something we never were able to enjoy before with the hour drive to work. I doubt he’ll come home every day, but we’ll enjoy it. Katy thinks it is really cool to get extra daddy time.
Each day we are getting a little bit more unpacked and moved in. I tend to count the number of boxes we empty each day as some sort of a reward! Each of the rooms seem settled except my office, but I am slowly working on that, at least when I can keep procrastination at bay! (I’m not sure if writing my blog is really procrastinating, or just doing something I want to do.)
Yesterday, we slept in some, and got up in time to have our new freezer delivered. Then, we got going on our day of outside/garage work. Phil mowed the lawn (and decided that half an acre – in comparison with our .1 acre before – is a lot more than he thought it was!), I pulled weeds in the landscape gardens, and then got rid of dead plants, etc. We moved onto cleaning up the garage…first task: getting the freezer settled into it’s new home. Then, once that was done, we started working on rearranging the garage so that we could utilize the space better without tripping on things. We were able to rearrange and make more space in the garage. I think we’ll be glad for trash day again this week! (I have pictures of our first trash day which caused a stir in the neighborhood! That’s for another blog!) We will be able to get more boxes out of the garage again. That’s helpful. Last week, we regained our living room because it was full of boxes to go out. We also gained space in the garage because of the 8 bags of trash and other boxes from in there that we put out.
Around 3:30, my grandparents stopped by. They had been visiting our friendly neighbor down the road (Wal-Mart), and decided to stop over and see how we were doing. We invited them for supper and were able to entertain them as our first real dinner guests! (that’s not to say that the people who ate with us last weekend weren’t real, but it wasn’t a planned meal of entertaining!)
Today, we went to a contemporary service at College Church. It was definitely different from what we are used to. Time will tell where we end up.
Oh, on Wednesday, Katy and I went to MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) together. It was quite different then we were used to (her biggest complaint was that she was the only girl and didn’t get to play anything…the boys played trucks). I got to know some of the moms, even running into a girl Phil and I went to school with – Christy (Foster) Parandi. That was a neat connection. We hope to get together with them sometime soon. I also have the privilege of being the sole Pampered Chef consultant of the group! There are a lot of people in the area that love PC, but don’t have a consultant, so I hope to use this to my advantage. The gal who was in charge of Creative Activities was using 3 Batter Bowls and some scrapers! I asked her about it and she admitted to loving PC! I haven’t booked any shows yet, but did manage to pass out 4 catalogs today at church. One of the ladies was Lilly’s Sunday School teacher who apparently used to be a Director with PC. I didn’t get to ask many questions to find out why she quit. She said there were a lot of people at her work who would be happy because they wanted a consultant.
Friday night, I had the opportunity to talk with a lady at Lowe’s who likes PC too. Lilly went with Phil to get her a catalog, and she grabbed some information about the business too, so who knows. Things are starting to look up. I still only have 1 show booked for November, but I’m getting my name out there.
Our house is slowly beginning to feel more like home. We are figuring out how to fit more of our furniture in (this house is smaller and especially our bedroom!), and making additions to different areas of the house to make them fit our style even better. I’m missing my carpet. There is NO carpet in this house at all. We have hardwood and tile/linoleum throughout. It’s going to take some getting used to. I tried to sweep through the house at least 3 times this week. The bathroom seems to need to be swept at least 1 time a day. It is so much easier running a vacuum! Oh well, they are pretty.
Supper is in the oven, and I need to go help Phil put up a shelf in Katy’s room for all her Veggie Tales and other dolls that go on it. We’ll get to eliminate 3 boxes just by doing that! For those of you who are list people, it’s kind of like checking off the things you’ve done – it’s a great feeling. I also look at it as 1) that much less to settle, and 2) that much less boxes in the house and garage!
